Greetings from Asheville, where good music is always found on the turntable, in the CD player, or in the MP3 player. Today’s Single Of The Day comes from a man whose place of birth lies just to our west, Canton, North Carolina; Bill Phillips. Bill Phillips began his career like many of his era, performing on radio shows in places such as Miami, before eventually winding up in Nashville. Though his first charted single appeared in 1959 (a duet with Mel Tillis on “Sawmill”), it wasn’t until 1966 when he finally broke into the top 10, thanks to a song penned by a then-unknown Dolly Parton, “Put It Off Until Tomorrow”, which basically launched her career. Today’s single would be the follow-up, and become the second of Bill Phillips’ 4 top 10 singles.

Released by Decca in the Summer of 1966, “The Company You Keep” would peak at 8 on the charts. A medium-slow number, the singer is warning his sister about her lifestyle and who she hangs with, noting that even if she’s doing nothing wrong, she’ll still be judged by “the company she keeps”. It’s a good record, not as good as the previous, but still quality, featuring a strong performance by Phillips.
